The second round of the Stillwell Hyundai Circuit Excel Cup, sponsored by Stanvac Korean Auto Wreckers, was contested over the weekend of May 21st and 22nd at Mallala Motor Sport Park, as part of the CAMS State Motor Racing Championship, otherwise known as the “Master of Mallala 2016″ series.
2014 champion Asher Johnston continued finding more pace from the TAFE SA/Pannowitch Racing Team Excel, claiming pole position with a 1.27.48 lap time, and going on to win both opening races ahead of Shaun Pannowitch and the retiring Brodie Cook, who both shared a 2nd and 3rd place apiece in Races 1 and 2.
Whilst Saturday saw perfect racing weather, Sunday started with strong winds whipping up thick dust storms during Race 3, won by Brodie Cook ahead of Shaun Pannowitch and Danny Errigo, after Asher Johnston was turned around on the first lap, who then charged from the rear of field to finish 5th in just 8 laps.
Race 4 saw light rain settle the dust, the conditions not hampering Johnston who reclaimed victory ahead of Pannowitch and Cook, whilst slightly further back in the field, Scott Stephenson was forced to retire after being turned around and taking a heavy hit from Danny Maul. Both cars would be patched up and mechanically repaired for the 5th and final race, but Stephenson’s bad luck continued, suffering further heavy damage after colliding with a spinning Richard Hopkins on the opening lap. The carnage unfortunately worsened, when John McGarry rolled his vehicle on the following lap, bringing out the safety car for all but the final lap, which saw the top three positions mirror those of Race 4.
At the conclusion of racing, it was Asher Johnston awarded the round victory, ahead of team mate Shaun Pannowitch and the retiring Brodie Cook. Full results for qualifying and all races can be found on Natsoft, and preliminary season positions will be updated soon our Championship Standing page.
